History

The Long Beach Rotary Scholarship Foundation (LBRSF), a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, was established by Long Beach Rotarians to offer scholarships to Long Beach area students at Long Beach City College (LBCC) and California State University, Long Beach (CSULB).

Rotarians providing student loans began in 1929.  The LBRSF was incorporated in 1934 to continue the Student Loan Program.  In the early 1960s, it was converted to a scholarship program for LBCC and CSULB students.  It all started with contributions from Rotarians and other third parties. One of the first contributions, from Rotarian Hap Appleton, was appreciated stock he bought in the 1930s in a lesser-known company - IBM.

As a result of generous contributions, the Foundation currently has assets totaling over $10 million including a 50% interest in an Irvine industrial building donated by Albert Reingardt.

In our 60+ year history, the Scholarship Foundation has funded over 4,500 annual student scholarships totaling more than $5 million.
